We all need to feel safe while staying at home. Thus we need basic knowledge of what to do and what to refrain from to prevent the fire. It’s useful to identify the hazards and to remove them to the best extent possible. Smoke alarms and accurate escape plan along with easy access to escape ways are really saving our lives.

So, let’s take some advices to be used in our homes. Kitchen as home fireplace has certain hazards mostly connected with open fire in it.

The advices are as follows:

Use automatic shutoff kitchen appliances along with automatic shutoff devices in ovens and burners. Otherwise get used to use timers for the same purpose.

• Regularly check fridges, kettles, toasters, multicooker, etc. for damaged electrical cords and thermostats.
• Never leave your house while cooking on the burner/ in the oven.
• Have appropriate clothing to cook as loose long sleeves can cause troubles.
• Keep all kitchen appliances clean and in good working order.
• Pot cover kept nearby will assist you to “take it off” if fire occurs.

Bedroom seems to be safe, but to make it really safe: Make a rule in your family – bedroom is not for smoking!

• Smoke alarm in every bedroom is really useful, it can save you life!
• Check on regular basis all electric appliances available in your bedroom – starting from TV set and ending with electric blanket or iron.
• Living room, especially the ones with fire places:
  Appropriate size fire screen is to be an absolute must for your fireplace.
• Don’t leave lit candles coming out and keep them out of reach of children.
• Don’t use extension cords to replace required additional outlets.
• Be careful with flammable materials, such as New Year trees when you use candles and other open fire sources.
• Never leave cigarettes unattended, either in ashtray or out of it.
  As for the basements and garages, gasoline, liquefied gas and things like these are the main hazards.
• Gasoline is to be stored in a good ventilated spaces, not in basement or attics.
• Flammable materials, whatever they are – paints, thinners, gasolines, etc. are to be stored in approved containers and far from fire sources.
• Don’t smoke in back rooms, including basement, garage and workshop. Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children.
• Furnaces, chimneys, etc. are subject to regular thorough check and professional’s advice in case necessary.
• Keep areas clean. Remove all garbage including oily rags, used paper, wool as soon as the works are done. Keep the escape way free.
